When a Venmo user dies, a family member or the executor contacts Venmo Support, shares a copy of the death certificate and, if there is money or crypto in the account, proof of authority for the estate. Documents go through a secure upload link from a Venmo agent, not by email. Venmo says it can't give anyone access to the account or transfer its ownership; it closes the account and pays any balance by check. If the person bought crypto in Venmo, ask how that will be handled before the account is closed.
This guide follows Venmo's U.S. help center as of October 2026. Venmo's reply to your request is what counts.

How to contact Venmo about a deceased user
Venmo asks you to reach a support agent:
- In the Venmo app: Me > Settings > Get Help > Chat With Us, then ask for an agent.
- On the web: "Connect with Support" on Venmo's Contact Us page.
Have ready the person's full first and last name and the email address or phone number linked to their Venmo account. Type the support address yourself; don't use a phone number from a search ad or social media post.
The documents Venmo asks for
| Document | When |
|---|---|
| Copy of the death certificate | Always |
| Your government-issued photo ID | If there is money or crypto in the account |
| Proof of your address | So Venmo can send the check |
| Legal proof you can act for the estate | For example a probate court order naming you executor, or letters of administration |
| IRS Form W-9 for the estate | From the IRS website |
Venmo says it will tell you if it needs anything else. Don't email the documents: after you reach an agent, you'll get a secure link to upload them.
If the account is empty, the death certificate may be enough. If there is a balance or crypto, someone with authority over the estate needs to be appointed first. The estate usually needs its own taxpayer number (EIN) for the W-9; the estate's lawyer or accountant can help.
Close the Venmo Credit Card first
If the person had a Venmo Credit Card, it must be closed before the Venmo account. The card is issued by Synchrony Bank, which has its own deceased-notification form linked from Venmo's help page. Synchrony handles the card balance and any further contact about it.
Ask about the crypto before the account closes
Venmo's help page mentions crypto only as a reason it may ask for more documents. It doesn't say how the crypto is handled. Venmo's crypto terms link to PayPal's, which say "You must sell or transfer any Crypto Assets in your Crypto Account before closing it." So ask Venmo, in writing:
- Will the crypto be sold for cash, or can it be transferred to the estate or an heir?
- Can Venmo give the value of each asset on the date of death?
- Is there also a PayPal account? PayPal has its own deceased-account process.
The date-of-death value matters for taxes: in the U.S., inherited crypto usually gets a stepped-up basis. See is inherited crypto taxable?
Crypto bought in Venmo is held for the customer, so there is no recovery phrase to find. If you find a 12 to 24-word phrase anyway, the person probably also had a self-custody wallet, which follows a different route; see how to find out if a deceased person had crypto.
How the balance is paid
If money is left in the account, Venmo issues a check to the address you provide. Venmo doesn't move the account to anyone else.
Don't sign in, and watch for fake support
Signing in with the deceased person's phone or password isn't a claim, and Venmo says it won't transfer ownership of an account. Keep their phone number active while Venmo reviews the request.
Fake "Venmo support" numbers are common. No real agent will ask for a password, a login code, remote access to your computer or a fee to release a balance. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center has warned about companies that falsely claim they can recover crypto for an upfront fee. See the recovery-scam checklist.

If you use Venmo: make it easier for your family
- Write down that you have a Venmo account, the phone number and email it uses, and whether you hold crypto in it.
- Note any Venmo Credit Card.
- Say who your executor is and where your will is kept.
A letter of instruction can hold all of this without any password. PingVaults can deliver that note to a trusted contact after a period of inactivity; it doesn't replace Venmo's process or prove anyone's authority.

Common questions
How do I close a deceased person's Venmo account?
Contact Venmo Support in the app (Me > Settings > Get Help > Chat With Us) or through the Contact Us page, give the person's name and the email or phone on the account, and share a copy of the death certificate. If there is money or crypto, Venmo may also ask for your photo ID, proof of address, proof you can act for the estate and a W-9 for the estate.
Can I log in to my deceased parent's Venmo account?
No. Venmo says it can't give access to or transfer ownership of an account to anyone other than the original account holder.
What happens to money in a deceased person's Venmo account?
Venmo sends a check to the address you provide, after it has the documents it needs.
What happens to crypto in a deceased person's Venmo account?
Venmo's help page doesn't say. Its crypto terms (PayPal's) require crypto to be sold or transferred before a crypto account is closed, so ask Venmo in writing whether it will sell or transfer the crypto, and for the value on the date of death.
Do I have to email documents to Venmo?
No. Venmo asks you not to email them; an agent sends you a secure upload link.
